Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on GMC vehicles?

Aftermarket shells and fob cases for this generation are widely available and often identical in quality to what comes in the box from the dealer. The factory FCC ID and the dealer part number are standardized, which means verified aftermarket versions of this fob are a real option.

What matters more than OEM versus aftermarket is that the key gets cut correctly and programmed correctly. A fob from any source that isn't properly enrolled to the vehicle's immobilizer is just a paperweight. That programming step is where the job actually lives, and we do it on-site with professional diagnostic equipment.

How long will a replacement key last?

As long as you treat it reasonably, a long time. The programming doesn't wear out. The transponder chip in the key holds its pairing with the vehicle indefinitely once it's enrolled.

The parts that actually fail on these flip keys are physical: the pivot pin on the folding blade loosens up, the rubber button pads get soft or crack, and the shell itself can split at the seam if it takes a hard drop. When that happens, the electronics inside are usually still good. We can transplant the working internals into a fresh shell without going through a full reprogram. The CR2032 is the one thing that needs routine attention, typically every few years depending on how often you're using the remote functions.

What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

If the vehicle throws a security warning on the dash after a new key is made, that's worth paying attention to but it doesn't automatically mean the key failed. On GM vehicles from this era, an intermittent security warning can point to the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder losing consistent communication with the transponder. It can also be a sign the battery in the fob dropped just enough to cause inconsistent reads. We come back, diagnose it, and sort it out. That's part of the job, not an extra visit.

My 2013 Terrain starts fine but the remote lock and unlock stopped working. Is the key bad?

Not necessarily. On these flip keys, the ignition function and the remote entry function run on separate circuits. The transponder chip handles the start, and the remote side broadcasts to the body control module. If the car starts every time but the buttons do nothing, the most common culprits are a weak or dead CR2032, a corroded battery contact inside the fob, or a cracked solder joint on the button pad circuit board inside the shell.

Swap the battery first, even if it's recent. If that doesn't bring the remote back, open the fob and look at the contact pads under the buttons. On higher-mileage keys from this generation, the pad directly under the lock button tends to wear first because it takes the most presses. If the board looks intact, a shell swap with the original electronics transferred over usually restores full function without any reprogramming at all.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2013 Terrain. Can I program it myself?

The remote entry side of the 2013 Terrain does have an onboard programming procedure, meaning if you already have one working key, there's a sequence you can run through the door locks and ignition to add a second fob's remote functions without any external tool. GM published this for the keyed-entry remote on these vehicles.

The catch: that procedure only enrolls the remote functions, lock and unlock. The transponder chip that lets the vehicle start still requires a programmer. So if you're adding a spare and your original key is still working, you might get the remote buttons paired on your own. But if you're doing an all-keys-lost situation, or you need a cut blade that works in the ignition, you need a tech with the right equipment. Buying the fob online is fine. Just know which half of the job you can do yourself and which half you can't.
