South Winds in Oxnard isn't a neighborhood I get a lot of calls from, but when I do, it's usually someone who's been putting something off for a while.

This one was a grad school TA. She'd bought her 2018 Buick Envision from a friend of a friend, which meant she inherited the usual second-hand-car-key situation: one fob, cracked shell, and no idea if there had ever been a second. She'd been driving on that cracked fob for close to six months. The case was split at the seam and held together in a way I won't describe because it worked until it didn't.

I transferred everything into a new housing, verified all five buttons were reading correctly, and confirmed the fob was talking to the car the way it should. Then, while I had the car right there, I built a second key so she'd have a spare.

She asked how the dealer had quoted so much for something that took under an hour. I told her a lot of that is overhead and appointment slots. She nodded like she'd heard that answer before.

Two working keys, one job, done in the alley. Way less than what the dealer wanted.
