How Buick Lucerne Keys Changed Over the Years
First Generation (Early)
On-board programming makes this one straightforward. Your 2006 or 2007 Lucerne uses a standard transponder key with an ID46 chip and a GM Passlock or VATS immobilizer system. It is a 3-button setup, no remote start, and the key programs through ignition cycling without any scan tools.
First Generation (Mid)
GM upgraded to a 5-button remote head key here, adding remote start to the mix. Your 2008 or 2009 Lucerne still runs the ID46 chip, but now the immobilizer is GM's updated system. Programming works through on-board cycling or OBD-II, and the FCC IDs are OUC60221 or OUC60270.
First Generation (Late)
Same 5-button remote head key and ID46 chip as the mid years. The on-board 10-minute relearn procedure still works for all keys lost situations, which keeps things simple. Some 2010 and 2011 models may need an OBD scanner for adds or if the BCM gets stubborn during programming.
Which Key Does Your Lucerne Use?
A traditional metal key with a transponder chip hidden inside the plastic head. Three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. No remote start on these early models.
This is the chunky key with all the buttons built into the head. Five buttons including remote start. The transponder chip and remote are all in one unit, so when we replace it, you get everything in a single key.
Pricing by Generation
Price includes key cutting, transponder programming, and remote programming, all done on-site at your location.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
Same key, same chip, same result. About half the price, and you skip the tow.
Common Buick Lucerne Key Problems
Incorrect Key Blank Rejection
Owners blame programming when the real problem is the key blank. Cheap non-GM blanks, especially wrong HU101 variants, have 25% higher failure rates. We only use B111-PT blanks with the correct ID46 chip, which is why our programming sticks first time.
Security Light Timing Failure
First we check whether the security light changes at the end of each 10-minute, 30-second cycle. If it does not extinguish, timing is off or the BCM is not seeing the key. Sometimes a scanner reset clears the module. We carry GM-compatible OBD tools.
BCM Glitches in Programming
The BCM on 2008-2011 Lucernes occasionally refuses a new transponder code, throwing a theft-deterrent error. Electronic hiccup, not a key problem. We reset the BCM with Autel IM608 or VVDI, clear codes, reprogram. Beats the $500 ECM swap.
Can You Program a Lucerne Key Yourself?
If you have one working key, you can add a new one yourself. Insert the working key, turn to ON for one second, turn off, then insert the new key and turn to ON. For all keys lost, the 10-minute relearn procedure works too: three cycles of 10 minutes 30 seconds each, watching the security light. Timing has to be exact.
Same add-key procedure works with one working key. The remote start fob programs separately through the Driver Info Center display. If you have lost all keys, the 10-minute relearn still works, but it erases every previously programmed key. If the BCM gives you trouble, that is where professional OBD-II tools come in.
Same procedures as the 2008-2009 models. On-board programming handles most situations, but some 2010 and 2011 Lucernes need an OBD scanner if the BCM will not cooperate. The remote programs separately through the trip odometer reset button or the DISP button on the radio.
