2006 Buick Lucerne
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What is a transponder key and why does it need programming?

The blade is the mechanical part -- it has to be cut to match your specific ignition cylinder. The transponder chip inside the key head is the electronic part. When you turn the key, the immobilizer reads the chip. If it doesn't recognize it, the car won't start even if the blade is cut perfectly. That's why cutting alone isn't enough. The chip has to be enrolled to your vehicle using diagnostic equipment at the OBD port.

Q: What if I need a replacement key after hours or on a weekend?

Call anyway. We run seven days a week, 6 AM to 11:30 PM, including weekends and most holidays. If you're locked out Saturday night or realized Sunday morning you have one broken key left, that's exactly when we want you to call. No extra charge for evenings or weekends.

Q: Can I buy a transponder key blank online and have it cut at a hardware store?

You can get the blade cut at some hardware stores or locksmiths, but that only solves half the problem. A key blank for the 2006 Lucerne that hasn't been programmed will turn in the ignition and do nothing else. The car won't start because the immobilizer hasn't been introduced to that chip yet. The programming step needs a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port.

Q: My 2006 Lucerne starts fine most of the time but occasionally just cranks with no start. Security light is on when it happens. What's going on?

That intermittent pattern on a Lucerne of this age usually points to the immobilizer not consistently reading the transponder chip. Could be the chip in the key getting weak, could be the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder losing its connection, or it could be corrosion in the ignition wiring that's making the communication unreliable. The "starts most of the time" part is the tell. A completely dead chip or a fully failed antenna gives you a no-start every time.

2006 Buick Lucerne Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A documentary filmmaker called me from a dead-end street off a canyon road near the Bridle Path area in Simi Valley. His 2006 Buick Lucerne was sitting right where the pavement ended at a trailhead. No room to turn a flatbed around, nowhere for a tow truck to stage. He had one key left and it had stopped working. The security light was on, and the car just sat there.

The nearest dealer told him to arrange a tow first, then come in, then wait for an appointment. That wasn't going to work with the car wedged at the end of a dead-end street and no tow company willing to take the call on short notice.

I pulled up at the top of the street and walked my kit down to where he was parked. The Lucerne takes a standard transponder key -- blade cut to the vehicle, chip enrolled through the OBD port. I decoded the existing lock, cut a new key blade on site, and used my diagnostic tool to register the new transponder chip to the immobilizer. Took about twenty minutes standing next to his car on that dead-end street.

He drove out under his own power. The dealer route, if it had even been possible that day, would have cost him a tow he couldn't arrange and a wait he didn't have time for. Coming out to him meant he skipped all of it.

Buick Lucerne Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 2006 Buick Lucerne key have any buttons or a remote?▼

No. The 2006 Lucerne key listed here is a transponder key only -- a metal blade with a chip inside the head. There are no buttons, no lock or unlock functions on the key itself, no fob battery to replace. It turns in the ignition cylinder, and the chip communicates with the immobilizer when you do. If you have a separate key fob for door locks, that's a different piece entirely and not part of the ignition key replacement.
