He was the caretaker for a property off a dirt access road. His 2007 Buick Lucerne was parked just inside the ranch gate, dead key, no spare anywhere on site. He'd already called a dealer. They told him to tow it in. He called a tow company next. They took one look at the address and quoted him something that made no sense for a sedan that couldn't have been more than a mile off the pavement.

The plastic head was cracked along the bottom edge, which happens, and the chip inside was reading inconsistent on my scanner. That's the failure mode on these: the chip doesn't fully die, it just gets unreliable enough that the car throws a key warning and refuses to start.

Cut a new key blade, programmed the transponder to the car, verified the start. The whole thing happened at that gate without moving the car once.

The dealer route would have meant a tow on a road the driver didn't want to attempt, a wait for an appointment, and a bill that was a lot heavier than mine. He seemed less bothered by the key situation by the end and more annoyed that the cracked head had been quietly causing problems for weeks before it finally stopped working.
