How Buick Regal Keys Changed Over the Years
3rd Generation (G-body)
These last G-body Regals kept things simple. No transponder chip, no immobilizer, just a standard mechanical key that you can copy at any hardware store. If your blade is worn down from years of use, we cut a fresh one from the VIN code so it works like the day you bought it.
4th Generation (W-body)
Buick stayed with a straightforward mechanical key for the W-body Regal. Still no transponder chip and no immobilizer to deal with. These are simple keys, but high-mileage cars can develop worn blades that cause intermittent no-start issues. We cut to factory code, not a copy of your worn original.
5th Generation (Epsilon II)
GM stepped things up here with a transponder key and the PASS-Key III immobilizer system. Your key has a chip inside the head that talks to the car's computer every time you turn the ignition. Without the right chip programmed to your specific Regal, the engine will not start. We read the security PIN through the OBD port and program on-site.
6th Generation (Opel Insignia)
Buick went full smart key with push-button start for this generation. Your fob has a laser-cut emergency blade inside and uses GM's Advanced Immobilizer system, which requires OBD-II programming plus GM server authentication. This is the most complex Regal key system ever made, and yes, we handle it mobile in your driveway.
Which Key Does Your Regal Use?
A plain metal key with no electronics. No chip, no remote, no battery to worry about. If it turns the ignition, you are good.
This key has a chip hidden inside the plastic head that must be programmed to your car. The three-button remote locks, unlocks, and pops the trunk. Looks like a regular key but the electronics inside are what make it start your engine.
A proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Walk up, grab the handle, and the car unlocks. Push the button to start. There is a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside the fob for when the battery dies.
What to Expect Price-Wise
All prices include the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing; lockouts run $95-$125.
Us vs. the Dealer
Your insurance company does not care who made the key, just that it works. We give you the same result for less money and zero hassle.
Common Buick Regal Key Problems
Transponder Failure (2009-2017)
The chip in your key head can fail from age, heat, or repeated drops. When it stops talking to the PASS-Key III immobilizer, your Regal cranks but will not fire. We test the transponder signal on-site and program a replacement key if the chip is dead.
Remote Fob Battery Drain (2012-2017)
Buttons stop, or only work right next to the car? eAssist on some 2012-2017 Regals is known to interfere with fob battery life. A fresh CR2032 usually fixes it in 30 seconds. Fob damaged? We carry replacements on the truck.
Immobilizer Sync Loss (2018-2020)
Owners think the smart fob is broken when the real problem is lost sync between fob and BCM. Happens after a battery replacement or jump start on the 6th gen Regal. The GM Advanced Immobilizer needs OBD-II reprogramming with server authentication.
Key Blade Wear (1995-2004)
We check the blade profile first on these older Regals. A worn key mimics a cylinder problem, and plenty in Simi Valley and Camarillo have paid for ignition work they did not need. We cut a fresh key from factory code and test. Still sticks? Then we talk.
Can You Program a Regal Key Yourself?
You can program a keyless entry remote yourself using the GM on-board procedure with one working key. This only programs the remote buttons, not the key itself, since these generations do not have transponder chips.
No DIY procedure available for this generation. The PASS-Key III transponder system requires professional scan tools and a security PIN read to program a new key. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we handle it on-site.
You can program a smart key remote using the GM 10-minute relearn procedure, but it takes three 10-minute cycles and only handles the remote functions. The transponder and proximity features still require professional OBD-II programming with GM server access.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the 2018-2020 Buick Regal TourX was the first Buick station wagon sold in America since 1996. It was built in Germany alongside the Opel Insignia, and the two cars share the same key system. Buick quietly brought back the wagon by calling it a "sportback" and hoping nobody would notice.
