Down near Channel Islands Harbor, a woman waved me down from her driveway before I even parked. She had a 1997 Buick Regal sitting there, and she was already explaining the situation while I was still grabbing my bag.
Her fob had stopped working about a week earlier. She had replaced the CR2032 herself, which was the right call, but the remote still did nothing. She assumed the fob was dead and had called the dealer. I sat in the driver seat and ran through the basics first. The replacement CR2032 she had installed was seated correctly and reading good voltage. The fob itself was intact, no cracked board, no corroded contacts. The issue was enrollment. After a battery swap on these older GM remotes, the module sometimes drops the fob from memory and it needs to be re-paired. That was exactly what happened here.
I ran the re-enrollment using my programmer through the OBD port, confirmed the fob registered, and walked every button. Lock, unlock, and the other two buttons all came back. Took about 30 minutes on site, most of that just being methodical.
She had genuinely believed she needed a new fob and a multi-day dealer visit. She needed neither. The dealer comparison was never really the point for her. She was just relieved to be done with it in her own driveway before noon.
