A retired English professor near Hollywood Beach in Oxnard called me about her 1997 Buick Regal. She had one working key left and a dead remote. The dealer told her to tow it in, quoted a multi-day turnaround, and priced the whole thing like she was buying a second car.

I pulled up to her cottage and started with the easy half. Her ABO0204T remote just needed a fresh CR2032 and a reprogram. On these 97 Regals, the fob is RF-only for locks, trunk, and panic. It doesn't talk to the VATS system at all. The immobilizer side is all in the ignition key blade, that little resistor pellet that the Theft Deterrent Module reads every start cycle.
I cut a new VATS key on site, matched the correct resistance value out of the 15 possible codes using my meter and the existing key as reference, then verified the Theft Deterrent Module accepted it clean. No three-minute relearn loop, no SECURITY light drama.
Tested the ignition key twice. Tested all four remote buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Walked both doors. She watched the whole thing from her porch steps, then just said, "That's it?"
That was it. Thirty-five minutes in the driveway, a fraction of what the dealer wanted, and she never left home.
