2000 Buick Regal
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What is this type of key and how does it work on the 2000 Regal?

The 2000 Regal uses a remote with a standard metal blade. The blade handles the ignition and the door lock cylinder. The remote side handles keyless entry through the buttons. On this generation, the two systems are independent. A dead or unprogrammed remote does not prevent the car from starting. You can always get in and drive using just the blade.

Q: Do I need to be present for the whole job?

Yes, at the start. I check your ID and registration against the vehicle before anything gets cut or programmed. After that, you can hang back. When the key is done, we run through it together so you can see it working before I leave.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2000 Regal. Can I program it myself?

On this generation of GM vehicles, there is an onboard programming sequence that some owners can do themselves at home, no tools required. It involves a specific sequence of door locks and ignition steps that puts the car into a mode where it will accept new remotes. Whether it works depends on the exact setup of your car and whether you follow the steps exactly, because the timing matters. The catch is that it programs all remotes at once.

Q: My 2000 Regal remote works sometimes and not others. Is the fob dying or is something wrong with the car?

Usually the fob. Intermittent response on these older GM remotes is almost always a weak CR2032 first, and a worn or corroded battery contact second. Start there. If a fresh battery and clean contacts don't fix it, the fob itself may have a cracked solder joint inside from being dropped or sat on. That's common on remotes this age. On the vehicle side, the receiver can occasionally be the issue, but that's less common.

2000 Buick Regal Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Casitas Springs, a guy had just bought a used 2000 Regal. The seller handed him one key and told him to get a copy made sooner rather than later. He called the dealer first. They quoted him a number that made him look the car over twice to make sure it was worth it.

He wasn't sure what he actually needed, just that he wanted a spare before something went sideways. A lot of people in his situation assume it's some complicated job.

I met him where the sale happened, a bank parking lot just off the main road. The original fob was in rough shape. The battery door had a small crack in it, the kind you get when someone pries it open with a screwdriver instead of a coin. Battery contact looked okay once I got inside, but it was borderline.

I cut a spare key blade to match his existing one, then programmed both remotes so they worked together on the car. Tested every button on both fobs before I closed up my bag.

He had two working keys inside twenty minutes. The dealer option came up once, briefly, and he just shook his head. Sometimes that's the whole conversation.
