Over in College Estates, I got a call from a guy who had been sitting in the Regal's driver seat for twenty minutes trying to figure out why the car wouldn't start. Fob in hand, foot on the brake, pushing the start button -- nothing. The dash kept throwing a key-not-detected warning. He had already googled it and convinced himself the immobilizer had gone bad.

I asked him one question before I drove out: when did you last change the fob battery? Long pause.

When I got there, I popped the fob open. The CR2032 inside was original from the factory. The car was a 2018, and this was the first time that battery had ever been touched. Voltage was low enough that the proximity antenna couldn't read it from a normal pocket distance, but the car still wouldn't respond even when he held it close -- the contact plate inside had a faint layer of oxidation from years of humidity getting into the case.

I seated a fresh CR2032, cleaned the contact points, and snapped the fob back together. Key-not-detected warning gone. Start button worked on the first press. Doors locked and unlocked cleanly from across the driveway.

He had been about to call the dealer and arrange a tow. The job took about eight minutes on his driveway. That's the version of this call I'd rather everyone get.
