Got a call from a guy over in the Silver Strand neighborhood in Oxnard. His 1996 Buick Regal would not start, and the SECURITY light on the dash was just sitting there, solid. He had already tried a plain blank cut at a hardware store. Turned the ignition, nothing. Cranked but no fuel. Classic VATS lockout.
When I got there, I could see the problem right away. The hardware store key had no resistor pellet in the blade. Just a flat metal blank. On a 1996 Regal with the VATS system, the Theft Deterrent Module reads the resistance value through two tiny contacts in the ignition cylinder. No pellet, wrong pellet, corroded pellet, and the TDM tells the ECM to kill fuel injection. The car cranks all day but will never fire.
I measured the pellet on his original worn-out key with a multimeter. It read right around 3.74k ohms, which is VATS resistor number 5 out of 15. Cut a new VATS key on the correct B62-P blank with the matching pellet, and the Regal fired on the first turn.
The whole thing took about twenty minutes on his driveway. He had already called a dealer in Oxnard and they quoted him a wait of three to five business days just for the key to come in. I was done before lunch.
Sometimes the fix is not programming or diagnostics. It is just knowing which resistor pellet goes in the blade.
