How Buick Changed the LeSabre Key Over the Years
VATS Resistor Era
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is a tiny resistor pellet embedded in the blade. Your LeSabre reads that pellet's resistance value, and if it does not match one of 15 possible values stored in the system, the car will not start. There is no transponder chip on these; the resistor pellet alone gates the immobilizer. Programming requires EEPROM access to clone or learn the pellet code, which means professional tools only.
PK3 Transition
GM swapped the resistor pellet for a real transponder chip during these overlap years. Your key now carries a Texas 4C chip running the PK3 immobilizer system. Programming happens on-board, which is simpler than the EEPROM method, but you still need the right equipment to confirm your ECM type before anything gets written.
PK3+ Remote Head Key
This is where your LeSabre got a proper remote head key with the buttons built right into the key head. It runs a Texas 4D chip on the PK3+ immobilizer, and programming goes through the OBD-II port under your dash. We pull the PIN, write the chip, and your new key starts the car. The FCC ID on these is KOBLEAR1XT.
Which Key Does Your LeSabre Use?
A standard metal key with a resistor pellet in the blade and a separate remote fob for locks. The key itself handles starting; the fob just does lock and unlock.
Looks similar to the earlier key, but the resistor pellet is gone. A Texas 4C transponder chip inside the key head communicates with the PK3 immobilizer to start the car.
The buttons are built into the key head now, so everything is one piece. A Texas 4D chip handles the immobilizer, and the remote controls your locks and trunk.

Common LeSabre Key Problems
VATS Failure
Your 1995-1999 LeSabre cranks but will not start, SECURITY light on. The VATS ring contacts inside the cylinder corrode and stop reading the resistor pellet. We measure the pellet, verify the contacts, and cut a matched key or bypass the worn VATS module.
Transponder Chip Recognition Loss
Owners assume the battery is dead when their 1999-2005 LeSabre stops recognizing the key. The real culprit is usually a failing antenna ring around the ignition or a weakened transponder. We test ring and chip separately before any charge.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
Corrosion inside the fob case is why your 2000-2005 LeSabre remote stops working, even with a fresh CR2032. The contacts oxidize, the fob loses programming. We clean the contacts, replace the battery, and run a full relearn.
Door Cylinder Actuator Failure
Before reprogramming, we check whether the key is the problem at all. On 1995-2005 LeSabre models, the power door cylinder actuators wear out. Owners call thinking the fob lost programming, but the actuator failed. We test the fob signal first.
Can You Program a LeSabre Key Yourself?
You can program the remote fob yourself using the Data Link Port jumper method under the dash. But the transponder key itself requires EEPROM programming, which means professional tools. The remote is DIY; the key is not.
If you already have at least one working key, you can add a new transponder key using GM's ignition relearn procedure. Insert your original key, turn to ON, turn off, swap to the new key within 10 seconds, and wait for the SECURITY light to go out. No tools needed. If all keys are lost, you need professional OBD-II programming.

Did You Know?
The 1995-1999 Buick LeSabre used GM's VATS system with 15 possible resistor values embedded in the key blade, making it one of the last GM models before full transponder adoption. Fifteen tiny resistance values standing between a thief and your car. Analog security at its most stubborn.
