I got a call from a guy out in South Winds, Oxnard, early on a Tuesday. He was at a salvage yard, restoring an older GM sedan he'd picked up, and his key snapped clean at the base. Half the blade was stuck in the ignition cylinder, the other half was in his hand. He'd already tried fishing it with a pocket knife and made things worse.
I drove out to him. The salvage yard guys were curious, hovering a little, which I don't mind.
The extraction came first. The broken piece was in far enough that I had to use a hook pick and work it carefully around the wafers without disturbing the cylinder. These older GM cylinders can be fragile if you force anything, so I took my time. Got the piece out clean, wafers intact, cylinder still functional.
Then I decoded the lock and cut a fresh key to match. The transponder got enrolled to the vehicle, and I walked him through the onboard relearn sequence so he'd know how to add a spare later on his own if he ever needed to.
He was mobile again in just under an hour. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a tow plus a full cylinder replacement plus a new key, without even looking at it first. Getting the broken piece out and cutting a working key on site cost him a fraction of that route.
He went back to pulling parts. I headed back toward the 101.
