2004 Buick Lesabre
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know what replacement key to get for my 2004 Buick LeSabre?

The LeSabre takes a transponder turn key specific to that generation of GM vehicle. The blade needs to be cut to your car -- either from the key code on file or by decoding your lock cylinder directly -- and the chip has to be programmed to match your vehicle's immobilizer. A hardware store can cut the blade, but they can't do the chip side. A locksmith or dealer handles both.

Q: Is EZ Car Keyz licensed and insured?

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed by the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, fully insured, and bonded. We're also BBB A+ rated and enrolled in Google's Guaranteed program. You can look all of that up independently -- we're not asking you to take our word for it.

Q: My 2004 LeSabre starts and then dies a few seconds later. Is that a key problem?

That's a classic sign of a transponder mismatch. The ignition cylinder reads the blade cut and turns, but the immobilizer checks the chip separately. If the chip isn't recognized -- wrong key, unprogrammed copy, or a chip that's lost its enrollment -- the vehicle will cut fuel and kill the engine shortly after startup. It's a security response, not a mechanical failure. The fix is getting the correct key programmed to your vehicle, not diagnosing the engine.

Q: Can I program a replacement transponder key for my 2004 LeSabre myself?

On some older GM vehicles there's an onboard relearn sequence you can do with two working keys already programmed to the car. If you have two functional keys and want to add a third, that route may be available to you -- look it up for this specific generation. But if you're starting from scratch, or you only have one key left, you need diagnostic equipment to enroll the new chip. There's no ignition trick that works from zero keys.

2004 Buick Lesabre Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near The Collection in Oxnard on a Tuesday when the call came in. Guy said his LeSabre wouldn't start. He'd had a spare key made at a hardware store a few weeks back, used it once, and it worked fine -- or so he thought. His original key had gone missing that morning and now the hardware store copy was leaving him stranded in a parking lot.

I already had a pretty good idea what happened before I got there.

When I pulled up, he showed me the copy. It was cut close, close enough to turn the cylinder, but the chip inside was generic and had never been enrolled to his vehicle. The one time it started, he got lucky -- his original key had probably been sitting in his pocket and the car saw that one instead. He hadn't connected those dots.

I decoded the cut from his lock cylinder, cut a new key to match, and programmed the transponder chip to his vehicle's immobilizer right there in the lot. Took about 40 minutes start to finish.

He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call and find out. He did, right there on the spot. When he hung up, he just shook his head. He was back on the road for a fraction of what they quoted, and he didn't have to leave the car anywhere.

What battery does the 2004 Buick LeSabre key use?▼

There is no battery. The 2004 LeSabre uses a transponder key -- a standard metal key with a chip embedded in the plastic head. No fob, no remote, no battery to replace. If your key isn't working, the issue is either the cut, the chip programming, or the immobilizer communication, not a dead battery.
