1996 Buick Lesabre
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What is the FCC ID for the 1996 Buick LeSabre fob?

The factory FCC ID on the fob is printed on the back label. If your fob is lost or the label is worn off, don't worry about it. I identify the correct replacement from the vehicle year, make, and model. You don't need to track down that number yourself.

Q: I lost all my keys. Can you still make a new one?

Yes. On a 1996 LeSabre, the ignition key and the remote fob are two separate things, so "all keys lost" means we're dealing with them independently. For the ignition key, I decode the lock cylinder and cut a replacement key blade on site. No existing key needed. For the fob, a replacement remote gets sourced to match the original and then programmed to your vehicle.

Q: Can I program a replacement fob myself on a 1996 LeSabre?

Technically yes, there is an onboard programming mode built into these mid-90s GM vehicles. It involves cycling the door locks and ignition in a specific sequence to enter programming mode, then pressing a button on each fob you want to register. The catch is that entering programming mode erases all previously stored remotes first. So if you have a second fob you want to keep working, it has to go through the sequence at the same time.

Q: My 1996 LeSabre fob only works from a few feet away. What's going on?

Short range on these is almost always the battery, even if it was replaced recently. Beyond that, the small antenna coil inside the fob can develop a hairline crack in the solder joint from years of being dropped or squeezed. That's a common complaint on these older GM remotes. Also worth checking: the fob body itself. If the two halves of the case aren't snapping together cleanly, the internal components can shift just enough to affect performance.

1996 Buick Lesabre Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Strathearn, right off Madera Road, on a Saturday morning. His 1996 LeSabre was sitting in the driveway and the fob had stopped working. The car started and drove fine, but the remote was completely unresponsive, and he'd had it for years and didn't want to lose that convenience.

He'd already put a new CR2032 in. Still nothing.

I drove out, popped the fob open on the hood of my van. The new battery was in there, but one of the contact tabs was bent just slightly outward, barely making contact with the cell. I pressed it back, reseated the battery, and clicked it once. The doors locked. He was watching the whole time and kind of laughed, like he'd expected something more dramatic.

From there I went through every button, walked back about thirty feet, tested range in both directions, and did a few more lock and unlock cycles to confirm it wasn't intermittent. He said the dealer had quoted him a replacement fob and told him he'd need to come in.

He didn't need a new fob. He needed someone to show up and actually look at it.

What battery does the 1996 Buick LeSabre key fob use?▼

CR2032. It's a common size, easy to find anywhere. When I replace or service one of these fobs, a fresh battery goes in as part of the job. One thing worth knowing: the CR2032 in these older GM remotes can read as "good" on a basic tester but still underperform at the load the fob actually draws.
