I got a call from a guy in Strathearn, right off Madera Road, on a Saturday morning. His 1996 LeSabre was sitting in the driveway and the fob had stopped working. The car started and drove fine, but the remote was completely unresponsive, and he'd had it for years and didn't want to lose that convenience.
He'd already put a new CR2032 in. Still nothing.
I drove out, popped the fob open on the hood of my van. The new battery was in there, but one of the contact tabs was bent just slightly outward, barely making contact with the cell. I pressed it back, reseated the battery, and clicked it once. The doors locked. He was watching the whole time and kind of laughed, like he'd expected something more dramatic.
From there I went through every button, walked back about thirty feet, tested range in both directions, and did a few more lock and unlock cycles to confirm it wasn't intermittent. He said the dealer had quoted him a replacement fob and told him he'd need to come in.
He didn't need a new fob. He needed someone to show up and actually look at it.
