How Rendezvous Key Security Changed Over the Years
Pass-Key III Era
A remote head key with a Texas 4D (ID46) transponder chip and three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. Your Rendezvous uses GM's Pass-Key III immobilizer, which means the chip in your key talks to a coil around the ignition cylinder every time you start the engine. Programming is done on-board through ignition cycles, so no scan tool is needed for these early years.
Pass-Key III+ Transition
A remote head key with the same Texas 4D (ID46) chip, but GM upgraded some 2005 models to the Pass-Key III+ system. The key looks identical to the 2002-2004 version, three buttons, same CR2032 battery, same standard blade. On-board programming still works here, though we always verify by VIN because the transition was not consistent across every build.
Crypto 4D Upgrade
A remote head key with a Texas Crypto 4D (ID46) chip and the full Pass-Key III+ immobilizer. This is where GM tightened things up. The encryption on the chip is stronger, and programming now requires OBD-II scan tool access rather than the simple ignition cycle method. We use our Autel IM608 or Tech2 to handle these on-site in your driveway.
Which Key Does Your Rendezvous Use?
Standard blade transponder key with three buttons built into the head. Uses a Texas 4D (ID46) chip that communicates with your Pass-Key III immobilizer.
Same physical key as the earlier models, but some 2005 builds use the upgraded Pass-Key III+ system. We verify which system yours has before we cut anything.
Looks the same as the earlier key, but the Texas Crypto 4D (ID46) chip inside has stronger encryption. Requires OBD-II programming instead of the ignition relearn method.

Common Rendezvous Key Problems
Pass-Key III Resistor Pellet Wear
Turn the key, security light flashes, engine will not crank. The resistor pellet in the head wore down and the immobilizer no longer reads it. We clone the chip to a fresh key on-site, usually in under 30 minutes.
Transponder Chip Failure
The Texas 4D chip can delaminate or fail outright, especially on 2005-2007 models. The key turns the ignition but the engine refuses to start because Pass-Key III+ gets no signal. We carry replacement blanks with the correct ID46 chip.
Ignition Cylinder Sticking
First check on a 2002-2005 Rendezvous that will not start is the ignition cylinder. Debris builds up inside and the cylinder stops reading the key. Sometimes needs cleaning, sometimes replacing. We diagnose on-site before recommending anything.
Fob Battery Drain
Owners think the remote is broken when buttons stop working. Nine in ten cases it is a dead CR2032 or contact corrosion. Remote and transponder are separate, so the car still starts. Pop the case, swap the battery. Still nothing? Call (805) 790-8162.
Can You Program a Rendezvous Key Yourself?
Yes. If you have a correctly cut transponder key with the right ID46 chip, you can use the GM 10-minute relearn procedure through the ignition. Insert the new key, turn to ON for 10 minutes and 30 seconds until the security light goes out, then cycle OFF and back ON two more times with the same timing. It works about 75-85% of the time per user reports, but it erases all previously programmed keys.
Yes, the same 10-minute relearn procedure works on most 2005 models. You need a pre-cut key with the correct Texas 4D (ID46) chip. If you already have a working key, the add-key procedure is faster: insert the working key, turn to ON for 5 seconds, swap to the new key within 5 seconds, and wait for the security light to go out.
The 10-minute relearn can still work on some 2006-2007 models, but the Crypto 4D chip and Pass-Key III+ system make it less reliable without a scan tool. If the on-board method fails, OBD-II programming with a tool like the Autel IM608 is the backup. We handle both methods on-site.

Did You Know?
Back in 2001, Buick did something unusual: they launched the Rendezvous as GM's first crossover that blurred the line between minivan and SUV. It rode on the same U100 platform as the Pontiac Aztek, but Buick wrapped it in softer styling and a quieter cabin. From day one, it carried GM's Pass-Key III immobilizer, making it one of the earliest crossovers to ship with transponder security as standard equipment.
