2004 Buick Rendezvous
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What is a transponder key and why can't I just copy it at the hardware store?

A transponder key has a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you turn the key, the immobilizer reads that chip. If it's not recognized, the engine either won't start or dies within a couple of seconds of cranking. A hardware store can copy the metal blade just fine. What they can't do is program the chip inside. The copy will turn your ignition but the car will treat it like a blank piece of metal.

Q: What if I need a replacement key after hours or on a weekend?

We run seven days a week, 6 AM to 11:30 PM, including weekends and most holidays. Call us and if we're available, we'll come to you. No extra charge for evenings or weekends. Transponder key jobs for this vehicle are done on site, so there's no reason to sit and wait for a dealer appointment.

Q: I lost my only key to the 2004 Rendezvous. Is all-keys-lost harder to deal with on this vehicle?

It's a little more involved than having one working key in hand, but it's a standard job. When there are no working keys, the immobilizer has to be accessed through the diagnostic port to register a new key from scratch. There's no ignition-turn trick or relearn sequence you can do yourself on this vehicle. You need the right equipment and the process takes longer than a simple add-a-key job. That said, it's done all the time.

Q: My 2004 Rendezvous cranks fine but shuts off right after starting. Could this be a key or immobilizer problem?

Yes, that's one of the classic signs the immobilizer isn't accepting the key. A crank-and-stall, where the engine fires for a second or two and then dies, often points to a transponder that wasn't programmed correctly or a chip that the vehicle stopped recognizing. It can also happen if someone used a copied key that was never properly enrolled. Worth checking first: does the security light or a key-not-detected warning stay on after you try to start it?

2004 Buick Rendezvous Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out at the Ventura Harbor, I got a call from a guy who'd had his key duplicated at a hardware store. Looked right, turned fine, and did absolutely nothing useful after that. The car cranked, almost caught, then quit. He'd already tried it four or five times before calling me.

He was parked in one of the lots near the marina. I pulled up, he handed me the copy key, and I could see right away what happened. The hardware store cut the blade correctly but the transponder chip inside was never programmed. It's a copy of the metal, not a copy of the key.

I got his original working key from him, decoded the blade, cut a new key, and programmed the transponder to the vehicle's immobilizer on site. Tested it twice, idled it for a few minutes, no issues.

He mentioned the dealer told him it would take a few days because they'd have to order the key blank. I was done in under an hour, in the parking lot, while he walked down to the water.

Buick Rendezvous Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 2004 Buick Rendezvous have a remote or fob?▼

No. The 2004 Rendezvous key for this trim and configuration is a transponder turn-key. It goes into the ignition cylinder. There are no lock or unlock buttons, no fob, and no battery in the key. What you have is a key with a chip inside the head that communicates with the immobilizer when you turn it. If you're used to a remote, this one doesn't have it.
