Out at the Ventura Harbor, I got a call from a guy who'd had his key duplicated at a hardware store. Looked right, turned fine, and did absolutely nothing useful after that. The car cranked, almost caught, then quit. He'd already tried it four or five times before calling me.
He was parked in one of the lots near the marina. I pulled up, he handed me the copy key, and I could see right away what happened. The hardware store cut the blade correctly but the transponder chip inside was never programmed. It's a copy of the metal, not a copy of the key.
I got his original working key from him, decoded the blade, cut a new key, and programmed the transponder to the vehicle's immobilizer on site. Tested it twice, idled it for a few minutes, no issues.
He mentioned the dealer told him it would take a few days because they'd have to order the key blank. I was done in under an hour, in the parking lot, while he walked down to the water.
