2006 Buick Rendezvous
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement transponder key last on a 2006 Rendezvous?

A long time, realistically. The transponder chip doesn't wear out. There's no battery in this key to go dead. The programming doesn't expire. What eventually fails on these older keys is usually the key blade itself from wear, or the plastic head cracking from years of use. If you treat the replacement like any other key, it should outlast the car.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me. Every key I make is covered under warranty. That said, if a correctly programmed transponder key stops working on a 2006 Rendezvous, the problem is almost never the key itself. These GM immobilizer systems can develop their own faults, and on a vehicle this age, a weak car battery or a failing ignition cylinder can cause intermittent no-start issues that look like a key problem but aren't.

Q: I have two keys for my 2006 Rendezvous. Can I program a third one myself at home?

No, not on this vehicle. The onboard self-programming sequences that exist on some older GM models don't apply here the same way. Adding a new transponder chip to the 2006 Rendezvous requires a programmer connected to the vehicle. There's no ignition-turn sequence that enrolls a new chip. If you bought a blank online, you still need someone with the right equipment to complete the job. The cut alone won't do it.

Q: My 2006 Rendezvous turns over but won't stay running. Could it be a key issue?

It could be. When the immobilizer on these GM vehicles doesn't recognize the transponder chip, a common symptom is exactly that: the engine cranks, fires briefly, then dies. It's the vehicle's security system cutting fuel or spark after a second or two. Check the security light on the dash. If it's staying on or flashing after you turn the key, that's a strong indicator the immobilizer is involved. It doesn't always mean the key is bad.

2006 Buick Rendezvous Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A freelance writer in Ventura, over on The Avenue, called me on a Monday morning. Her 2006 Rendezvous was sitting in her apartment garage and she had one key left, worn down to the point where it was getting finicky in the ignition. She wanted a spare made before the original gave out entirely. Smart call.

She had already called a dealer. They told her the blank wasn't something they kept on the shelf and that she was looking at a few days just for the part to arrive, then scheduling on top of that. She was on a deadline, working from home, and needed the car to be a non-issue.

I was at her garage that same afternoon. The key blade blank was already in my van. I decoded her worn key, cut the new one to match, then connected my programmer and enrolled the transponder chip to the vehicle. The whole thing took about half an hour in her parking structure.

She tested it herself, turned the key, engine started clean. No hesitation, no stall. She seemed almost suspicious of how fast it went, like she was waiting for a catch.

The dealer would have been days out and a lot more money. That part almost wasn't worth mentioning. The real win was she had a working spare before her original key failed completely, instead of after.

Buick Rendezvous Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket key blanks for the 2006 Rendezvous?▼

I use OEM-spec blanks matched to this vehicle. For the 2006 Rendezvous, that means the correct key blank with the right transponder chip already inside. The immobilizer on these GM vehicles is specific about what it will accept, and starting with the right blank is what keeps the programming from fighting you. A mismatched chip type means a key that physically turns but a car that won't run.
