How the Verano Key System Evolved
Pre-Facelift
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but inside the head sits a Hitag2 Extended (ID46) transponder chip that talks to the PK3+ immobilizer every time you start the car. It is a 3-button remote head key with a high-security blade, FCC ID OUC6000066, and a CR2032 battery. Programming is done on-board through the OBD-II port, which keeps things straightforward for us and affordable for you.
Mid-Cycle Update
GM gave the Verano some minor styling tweaks here, but the key system stayed identical. Same Hitag2 Extended (ID46) chip, same PK3+ security, same 3-button remote head key with a high-security blade. Even the Turbo models use the exact same key. The only thing that matters for programming is pulling the correct PIN from the BCM, which we handle on-site.
Facelift
Updated grille and interior refresh, but under the hood the security system did not change one bit. Your 2016 or 2017 Verano still runs the Hitag2 Extended (ID46) transponder with PK3+. One thing we see more often on these later years is the BCM needing a reset after programming, especially on all-keys-lost jobs. We handle that as part of the service.
Which Key Does Your Verano Use?
A traditional key with buttons built into the head. You insert it into the ignition to start the car, and the remote buttons handle lock, unlock, and trunk.
Identical key to the earlier Veranos. Same blade profile, same chip, same buttons. If you have a Turbo, your key is the same as the base model.
The facelift Verano kept the same key design. Three buttons, high-security blade, CR2032 battery. No push-button start on most trims.

Common Verano Key Problems
Transponder Failure
Your Verano cranks but will not start, or the security light stays solid. The Hitag2 Extended (ID46) chip wears out or loses BCM comm, and PK3+ kills fuel. We read codes on-site and determine whether you need a new key or a BCM reset. Common 2012-2017.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Owners assume the fob is broken when it stops locking from across the lot. a dead CR2032, but on 2014-2017 Veranos we see rapid drain from an internal short or BCM polling. We test signal output first. Drains in under a month? The board may need replacing.
Door Cylinder Actuator Failure
The door actuator motor is the weak link on 2012-2015 Veranos, especially driver-side. When it fails, the lock clicks but the latch does not move, or it works only with temperature. Mechanical issue, not a key problem. We diagnose fob vs actuator.
Steering Column Lock Module Fault
Before assuming the worst, we check the basics. The 2016-2017 Verano can throw a security light and refuse to start because of a faulty steering column lock module, not a key. We verify the module status through OBD-II first before any work.
Can You Program a Verano Key Yourself?
Yes, if you already have two working keys, you can add a third using GM's 10-minute relearn procedure. You cycle the two existing keys in the ignition in a specific sequence, then insert the new pre-cut key. Timing is critical, and if you miss a step, you can erase your existing keys. It works, but it is not forgiving.
Technically possible using GM's 30-minute relearn through the door cylinder cylinder, but it requires a pre-cut key, a battery charger, and three consecutive 10-minute wait cycles. Most people call us partway through. If you are locked out in Simi Valley with no keys at all, call (805) 790-8162 and we will handle it in about 30 minutes with proper tools.
