2016 Buick Verano
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does it cost when I've lost every key versus just needing a spare?

More. Always more, on any vehicle. When you have a working key, adding a spare is a relatively quick programming job. The immobilizer already has a registered key in memory, so adding another one is a shorter process. When all keys are lost, the immobilizer has to be fully reset and new keys enrolled from scratch. On the 2016 Verano, that means running a timed security relearn sequence that you cannot shortcut.

Q: Do aftermarket keys actually work on a 2016 Buick Verano, or should I stick with OEM?

Aftermarket keys can work, but quality varies. The Verano's remote flip key has a specific transponder chip and a five-button fob that has to meet the vehicle's requirements. Cheap aftermarket shells sometimes use substandard circuit boards, and the rubber button pads on low-quality replacements tend to fail faster than the original. I use parts verified to work with this vehicle. Whatever I cut and program gets tested fully before I leave your driveway. You're not paying for a gamble.

Q: My Verano starts fine but the lock and unlock buttons on the flip key stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On the GM flip key from this era, the remote transmitter and the ignition function are independent. The transponder in the key handles starting the car. The remote buttons handle lock, unlock, and the rest. If your car starts but the fob buttons are dead, the issue is almost always in the fob itself, not the immobilizer system. Start with the CR2032 battery. A worn cell will kill button range and response before it affects anything else.

Q: Can I program a second Verano flip key myself at home?

The 2016 Verano does not have a simple owner-accessible self-programming sequence for the remote flip key. Enrolling a new key into the immobilizer requires a professional tool connected to the OBD port. There's no ignition-turn trick that works here. If you bought a key online hoping to save money on the programming side, you still need someone with the right equipment to finish the job. That's a quick call to us rather than a trip to the dealer.

2016 Buick Verano Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy out at a parking lot near the Via Marina area of Oxnard. He'd been golfing, came back to his 2016 Buick Verano, and his only key was gone. Checked his bag, checked the cart, walked back to the last two holes. Nothing. The pro shop hadn't seen it either. His car was sitting there and he had nowhere to be except stuck.

He found me online and asked if I could actually come to a parking lot. Told him that's the whole point.

When I got there, I decoded the door lock mechanically and cut a new key blade to match. Then came the part that takes patience: the immobilizer relearn on these Vernos when all keys are lost requires working through a timed security sequence, multiple cycles, watching the security indicator on the dash go through its routine before the system accepts the new key. You can't rush it and you can't skip it. I walked him through what was happening so he wasn't just standing there watching me stare at a dashboard.

By the time the last cycle finished and the key turned over without hesitation, he'd stopped checking his watch. His car started right there in the same spot he'd left it.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a tow plus the key job, with no promise of same-day service. He paid a fraction of that and didn't move the car once.

Buick Verano Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What's the cheapest way to replace my 2016 Buick Verano key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. A dealer will typically have you tow the car in, order the key, and schedule the programming separately. By the time it's done, you've paid for the tow, the part, the labor, and potentially a day or two without your car. With EZ Car Keyz, I come to you in the Oxnard area, including Via Marina, cut and program the key on site, and you drive away the same day.
