Got a call from a woman near the Santa Susana Depot Museum in Simi Valley. Her 1997 Buick Lesabre had one working remote left and it was held together with electrical tape. She said the lock button had stopped responding months ago and she'd been manually locking the doors every time she parked.
She'd already called a dealer. They told her the remote was discontinued and they'd have to order an aftermarket one, then schedule a programming appointment. Weeks out, and the quote made her sit down.
I had a compatible KOBUT1BT in stock. The 1997 Lesabre uses GM's older RF remote system, not a transponder-based smart key, so the programming process runs through the BCM (Body Control Module, GM part number 16231742 on most eighth-gen H-body Lesabres). I connected through the OBD-II port under the dash, accessed the BCM, wiped her old remote IDs, and registered both the new fob and her taped-up original after I cleaned the battery contacts and replaced the CR2032.
Tested all four buttons on both remotes. Lock, unlock, trunk release, panic. Walked around the car checking range from about 30 feet out.
She peeled the electrical tape off the old one, looked at it like she was mad at it for all those months of hand-locking, and tossed it in her purse as a backup.
Whole thing took maybe 20 minutes. She paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted and didn't have to wait weeks for a part.
