2020 Buick Regal
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know which fob is the right one for my 2020 Buick Regal?

The factory FCC ID printed on the back of your fob is the starting point. That number tells me which blank to pull, confirms the frequency, and makes sure the fob I'm programming matches what your vehicle's security system expects. If your fob is damaged or you don't have one to look at, the dealer part number tied to your VIN gets us to the same place.

Q: How much does a 2020 Buick Regal key replacement cost compared to the dealer?

Call us for current pricing. What I can tell you is that dealers on these proximity smart keys tend to quote a number that includes their labor rate, a parts markup, and whatever their shop fee runs. Most Regal owners who've called me after getting a dealer quote saved a good chunk by going the mobile route instead. The price we give on the phone is what you pay. No separate trip charge, no surprise fees at the end.

Q: My 2020 Regal start button is lit up but the car won't crank. The fob battery is fine. What's going on?

This is one of the more common complaints I see on these. A lit start button that won't turn the car over usually means the vehicle isn't detecting the fob at normal proximity range, even if the fob battery reads okay. First check: hold the fob closer to the button itself and try again. Second check: try starting from the key pocket under the center console armrest by resting the fob directly on it.

Q: Can I buy a fob online and just have someone program it, or does it have to come from the dealer?

Aftermarket fobs work fine as long as the factory FCC ID matches. You do not need a dealer-sourced fob. What you do need is someone with the right diagnostic equipment to register it, because there is no DIY button sequence or ignition trick for a proximity smart key system. The programming has to go through the OBD port. Bring the fob, I bring the tools.

2020 Buick Regal Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A sales rep called me from a hotel conference lot in Via Marina, Oxnard. He was there for a two-day event, had driven in from out of town, and somewhere between the airport and the hotel his only key fob had gone missing. No spare at home. Push-button start, no ignition cylinder, nothing to insert. The car just sat there.

He'd already called two other locksmiths. Both told him all-keys-lost on a Buick smart key wasn't something they could handle in the field.

I drove out to the lot. These GM-platform proximity smart key systems follow a consistent all-keys-lost procedure across the brand family, which means I run this same sequence regularly. I connected through the OBD port, let the security countdown run its full cycle, and registered a new fob to the vehicle. The previous fob, wherever it ended up, was wiped from the system at the same time.

The car started on a hotel parking lot in Oxnard, about 100 miles from where he lived. He made his morning meeting.

He mentioned the dealer back home had quoted him a wait time of several days just to get an appointment. The mobile call took under an hour from the time I arrived.

What battery does the 2020 Buick Regal key fob use?▼

CR2032. Widely available at pharmacies, auto parts stores, and most big-box stores. When I build a replacement key, a fresh CR2032 goes in before I hand it over. One thing to watch when you swap it yourself: the contact clips inside the fob are thin and easy to bend slightly if you pry the case open too hard.
