Out near Simi Hills Golf Course in Simi Valley, a guy lost his only key somewhere on the back nine. Searched the course for an hour, checked the pro shop, retraced his steps. Nothing. His 1997 Buick Riviera was sitting in the lot going nowhere.

First thing I did was decode the door lock with my B102 Lishi pick and decoder. Got the cuts, made a new mechanical key on site. But on a Riviera from this generation, the key alone does not start the car. The PASSKey II system reads a resistor pellet embedded in the blade, and the Theft Deterrent Module has to see the right resistance value out of fifteen possible values or it shuts down the fuel injectors and throws the THEFT SYSTEM dash light.

I measured the correct resistance value, matched it to the new key pellet, and then ran the security relearn. Three ten-minute cycles where you turn to ON, wait for the security light to go out, turn off, repeat. Thirty minutes of sitting there watching the dash. Not glamorous work, but it is the work.

After the third cycle, the car turned over clean. Then I programmed his KOBUT1BT remote, all four buttons, tested lock, unlock, trunk, and panic from across the lot.

He had been told the dealer needed a tow plus a few days wait. Instead, it was done in the parking lot that same afternoon for way less.
