2001 Ford Taurus
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to my location?

For calls in Ojai and the Matilija area, I'm usually on-site within 30 minutes depending on traffic. When you call, give me the year, make, and model so I can confirm I have the right blanks loaded before I leave. Everything for the 2001 Taurus travels with me, so there's no back-and-forth.

Q: Can I get a key made today?

Yes. I carry blanks and programming equipment for the 2001 Taurus on every run. No ordering parts, no waiting for a shipment, no two-trip process. You call, I show up, the key gets cut and programmed at your location. One job, one visit.

Q: I bought a replacement key blank online. Can you just program it, or does it have to be one of your blanks?

This comes up a lot and the answer is: maybe. The 2001 Taurus requires a key blank that carries a compatible transponder chip inside the head. A lot of blanks sold online look identical on the outside and will even cut to the right profile, but the chip inside isn't compatible with Ford's passive anti-theft system and the car will crank-and-die every time. Before I drive out, I'd want to know where the blank came from.

Q: My 2001 Taurus cranks but won't stay running. Could this be a key or transponder problem?

Yes, and it's one of the cleaner symptoms to read. When the immobilizer doesn't recognize the key, the engine fires and then shuts down within one to two seconds every time. It won't idle, won't catch. If that's what you're seeing consistently, the security system is the first thing to look at, not the fuel pump. Check whether the theft indicator light on the dash is staying on or flashing after the no-start.

2001 Ford Taurus Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a text from a hiker out near Matilija. He'd been on the trail for a few hours and when he came back to the trailhead, his key was gone. Somewhere on that trail, it had worked its way out of his pocket.

No dealer was going to help him from a dirt lot 20 minutes outside Ojai. He wasn't wrong about that.

He dropped me his GPS pin. I loaded the van with what I needed for his Taurus and drove out to him. The car was sitting exactly where he left it, the only vehicle still in that lot by then.

I decoded the lock to get the cut, made the blade, and then handled the transponder programming on-site. The whole thing happened in the dirt with the car right there.

When the engine turned over and held, he stood there for a second like he expected it to stall. It didn't. He drove out of that trailhead under his own power, same day, no tow, no waiting. The dealer comparison came up on its own, but honestly the tow alone would have cost more than my whole job. That part kind of speaks for itself.

How long does a 2001 Ford Taurus key replacement take?▼

It depends on where you're starting. If you still have one working key, adding a spare is faster because the system has a built-in onboard sequence that lets you register the new key using the existing one. That process takes a few minutes once the key is cut, and the whole job usually wraps up in 20 to 30 minutes on-site. If all keys are lost, it's a different job.
