2001 Ford Taurus Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy staying at the Ojai Valley Inn had hiked one of the trails nearby and came back to find his only key for a 2001 Ford Taurus had snapped right at the head. The blade was still jammed in the ignition. The plastic bow with the transponder chip was in his hand.

He called around. Closest Ford dealer told him they'd need the car towed in, and the next open appointment was over a week out. He was on vacation. That timeline didn't work.

First thing, I extracted the broken blade from the ignition cylinder using a standard broken key extractor. Then I decoded the lock wafers on the driver's door to get the original cuts, since the broken blade was too mangled to read cleanly. Cut a fresh H72-PT blank on the HPC Blitz in my van.

The PATS II part is where people expect it to get complicated. I connected through the OBD-II port, accessed the PATS module, and programmed the new 4C transponder. Ford builds in a roughly ten-minute security timer during the procedure, so there's a stretch where you're just standing there waiting. We talked about the hike.

Key turned, engine started, theft light went solid then off. He was back on the road same afternoon, for a fraction of what the dealer plus tow would have run him.
