Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2018 Ford Taurus Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was in College Estates in Oxnard, parked in front of a house on a weekday afternoon. The owner had a 2018 Taurus and had already ordered a replacement fob online. She just needed someone to cut the blade and program it. Reasonable plan.

What she didn't know going in was that she also had a second fob inside the house, sitting on a shelf near the front door. I asked about it before I started. She said she barely used it. I told her to go get it.

That second fob is the reason the call went smoothly. Had I started the key learn without it, that backup fob would have become dead plastic by the time she needed it. It happens more than people expect. The car doesn't warn you. It just quietly stops recognizing the old key the moment a new session runs.

I connected my diagnostic tool to the OBD port, accessed the security module, and ran the key learn sequence. Both fobs went in during the same session. Then I cut the blade on the new one and tested everything: lock, unlock, all five buttons, range from across the driveway, and three clean starts back to back.

The blade cut mattered too. A key that looks right but is off by a half-thousandth will wear the lock cylinder over time or start binding on a bad day. I decoded hers before cutting so the new blade matched what the lock actually wanted, not just what the original key showed.

She asked if most people bring both keys. Most don't. The ones who do tend to have had it happen to them once before.
