I got a call from a guy parked near the trailhead off Lake Los Carneros, out in Goleta. He was heading back to his 2011 Ford Taurus after a walk and the car wouldn't acknowledge the fob at all. Not the door handle touch unlock, not the start button -- nothing. He'd tried holding the fob directly against the start button, which is the right instinct when the battery is low, and still got a key-not-detected warning.
When I pulled up he had the fob apart already, battery sitting in his palm. He'd grabbed a CR2032 from the gas station down the road, swapped it in, same result. I checked the battery contacts inside the fob housing. One of them had a slight inward bow -- not dramatic, just enough that the new cell wasn't making solid contact. That's a fob that will drain a fresh battery in weeks or read intermittently on a good day.
I had a replacement fob shell and a fresh CR2032 on the van. Transferred the internals, seated the battery correctly, and then ran the programming sequence through the diagnostic port to make sure the vehicle recognized the new unit. Walked every button. Touch unlock on both front handles. Start button. All four buttons confirmed.
He'd already called the Ford dealer before me. They told him to bring it in, said it would be a day minimum just to get it looked at, and the preliminary quote for a new programmed fob was going to hurt. He paid a fraction of that, standing in the parking lot, and drove out in about 40 minutes from when I arrived.
The fob hardware failing on a car that otherwise runs perfectly is one of those problems that feels bigger than it is. On the 2011 Taurus, it almost never is.
