A couple near Meditation Mount in Ojai came out of a Friday night movie and their 2009 Ford Taurus wouldn't start. Dead fob. Neither of them knew about the backup procedure where you hold the dead smart key against the steering column's PATS antenna ring and press the brake plus start button. They figured the car was staying overnight.
They called me around 9pm just to ask if anything could even be done that late.
I was 15 minutes out. The HU101 emergency blanks, the CR2032 cells, the aftermarket fob shells, all of it already sitting in labeled drawers in the van. I don't order parts when you call.
Their fob, the M3N5WY8406 four-button, turned out to be a simple dead battery. Popped the case, seated a fresh CR2032, and ran a quick reprogram with my VVDI to re-sync remote functions. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, all four buttons responded clean. Push-to-start fired on the first press. Remote range came back to normal from about 30 feet out.
They both just stood there for a second like they were waiting for it to fail again.
They drove home that Friday night. The dealer would have meant leaving the car there until Monday and paying a good chunk more. When everything is stocked, a call at 9pm on a Friday is the same as a call at 9am on a Tuesday.
