Got a call from a woman near Ellwood Mesa Open Space in Goleta. Her 2010 Ford Taurus smart key just quit on her in a hospital parking lot. Groceries in the back seat, July heat, frozen stuff on a countdown. She pressed the button and nothing. Her car was right there, fifty feet away, ice cream going soft in a bag.
She tried the dealer first. Earliest they could fit her in was tomorrow afternoon. She called me. I was about twenty minutes out.
I got the door open and plugged my IM608 into the OBD-II port under the dash. The 2010 Taurus uses the M3N5WY8406 proximity fob running on Ford's PATS 4 system, 315 MHz, with the HiTag Pro transponder chip inside. Her old fob's CR2032 was completely flat, and when I cracked the housing I could see green corrosion creeping across one of the battery contact pads. The antenna trace looked intact, but that corroded contact was killing the signal before it ever left the fob.
I replaced the fob with a new unit, programmed it through PATS, and walked every function: lock, unlock, trunk, panic, push-button start, and passive entry on all four door handles. Tested the backup key blade in the driver's door just in case.
From her phone call to her engine running, forty-seven minutes. The groceries made it. Sometimes the whole job is just showing up while the ice cream is still cold.
