2016 Ford Taurus
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my 2016 Taurus to the dealer if I have no working keys?

No. Dealers will tell you that, but it is not the only path. We bring the same category of diagnostic tooling to your location in El Rio or anywhere else in Oxnard. The vehicle stays parked where it is. No tow, no sitting in a service queue for days. Taurus owners on forums have reported multi-day dealer waits for all-keys-lost jobs that a properly equipped mobile locksmith can handle in a single visit.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost replacement take on a 2016 Taurus?

Plan for 45 to 60 minutes on site. The immobilizer on this generation Taurus has a built-in security delay that kicks in during an all-keys-lost procedure, and you can hit it more than once depending on how the sequence goes. That wait is not something any tool skips around, it's just part of the job. Once the delay clears and the new fobs are registered, I run a series of start tests and button checks before I call it done.

Q: My 2016 Taurus fob works fine at the door but the push-button start says it can't find the key. What's going on?

This is a known pattern on this generation. The door handles use a different antenna than the start system does. So a fob that triggers the door handles just fine can still fail to be read by the start antenna, which sits closer to the center console area. What you'll usually see is the key-not-detected warning on the dash even though the fob clearly has battery and the doors responded to it.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2016 Taurus. Can I program it myself?

Not on this system. The 2016 Taurus smart key requires professional diagnostic equipment to register a new fob to the vehicle. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that works here. That kind of self-programming only existed on older Ford systems with a basic transponder key in an ignition cylinder. The smart key system is a different architecture entirely. If you already bought a fob, bring it to us.

2016 Ford Taurus Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy out in El Rio called me about his 2016 Taurus. He had one working fob left, and it was getting flaky. Range was down to almost nothing, and once or twice the car had shown a key-not-detected warning even when the fob was right in his hand. He had already put a fresh CR2032 in it and the behavior barely changed.

When I got there, I pulled up his fob history in the system. The original fob was still registered, still limping along, but a second key slot in the vehicle was empty. He had never had a second fob, just one from the day he bought it used.

I set him up with a new fob paired to the vehicle, confirmed both slots were active, and walked every button through its paces. Then the important part: I checked the emergency blade seated inside the new fob so he understood he had a physical backup if the electronics ever went sideways again.

He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call and find out, just for the education. He laughed and said he'd take my word for it.

Ford Taurus Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2016 Ford Taurus. Can you still make a new one?▼

Yes. All-keys-lost on the 2016 Taurus is a job we handle on site. The process involves connecting to the vehicle through the diagnostic port, clearing the existing key memory, and programming at least two new fobs into the system. That two-key minimum is a real requirement built into how the immobilizer works on these, not something dealers invented to sell you an extra fob. We carry the blanks for exactly this reason, so you're not waiting on parts.
