2000 Ford Taurus
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What is a transponder key and why does my 2000 Taurus need one?

The 2000 Taurus uses a key that has a small electronic chip embedded in the head. When you turn the ignition, a ring around the cylinder reads that chip. If the vehicle's security system recognizes the signal, the engine starts. If it doesn't, the engine won't run, even if the blade is cut perfectly and turns the lock without any problem. That's the part people miss. A correctly cut key from a hardware store won't start this car.

Q: Why does a dealer key job take so long when the actual programming isn't that complicated?

Three layers of delay stack on each other. First, the appointment backlog. Second, parts availability. If the right blank isn't in dealer stock, it gets ordered by VIN and shipped, which adds days. Third, the security system on these Fords has a built-in timed delay during the programming process, and the dealer workflow wraps that with write-ups, dispatch to a bay, and a tech who's juggling three other jobs.

Q: I have one working key for my 2000 Taurus. Can I add a spare myself at home?

Only if you have two already-programmed keys to start the process. The onboard add-a-key procedure on this generation of Ford's anti-theft system requires two valid programmed keys inserted in sequence before it will accept a third. If you only have one working key, the self-service method is blocked. You need diagnostic equipment to enroll the new key directly.

Q: My 2000 Taurus starts fine but the remote buttons on the key stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On the remote head key these cars use, the transponder that starts the car and the remote entry electronics are in the same unit, but they function independently. If the car starts, the transponder side is fine. Dead remote buttons are usually a worn contact pad inside the key head or a battery that's given out.

2000 Ford Taurus Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy over in the Hueneme Beach area of Port Hueneme. He'd been staying in one of the older condo complexes near the water and had managed to lock himself out after his remote head key stopped working entirely.

Not just the remote buttons, the whole key. Car wouldn't start, wouldn't recognize anything. He'd already tried his spare, but it turned out the spare had been sitting in a junk drawer so long that nobody had confirmed it was ever properly programmed in the first place.

He'd called the Ford dealer first. They told him the car had to come in. He told them it wouldn't start. That conversation went nowhere fast.

I drove my van to him. Everything I needed was already bolted in back: key cutting machine, programming tool, and blanks that fit the 2000 Taurus. I decoded the lock, cut a new blade to match, programmed the transponder chip to his vehicle's security system right there in the parking lot, and tested it through several start cycles to confirm the immobilizer was accepting it clean.

The spare key situation was exactly what I figured. It had never been enrolled. I added it to the system while I was already set up, so he left with two confirmed working keys instead of one key and a maybe.

He mentioned what the dealer had quoted him assuming he could even get the car there somehow. He said my total was a fraction of that. I didn't argue with him.

Ford Taurus Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a Ford dealer take to replace a key for a 2000 Taurus?▼

Longer than it should. The actual programming and cutting work isn't the slow part. Getting an appointment is. Ford dealers in Southern California regularly run two to four weeks out for service slots, and key jobs share the same queue as everything else. If the correct blank isn't on the shelf, it gets ordered by VIN and you wait for it to ship.
