Rincon Point on a Friday night is one of those calls I don't mind getting. Nice area, low traffic, easy to find.

A couple had been out near there and came back to their 2007 Ford Freestyle with a fob that had gone completely silent. No lock, no unlock, nothing. They assumed the car wouldn't start either, which is a common mistake with this setup. The fob and the ignition are separate. The key blade was still perfectly good. They just didn't know that.

I was in Carpinteria already, so I was there in about fifteen minutes. The van had everything already loaded: the right key blank for the Freestyle, fob housings, CR2032 cells, and the programming gear. Nothing to order, nothing to wait on.

Turned out the fob battery had just given out. Fresh CR2032, resync the remote functions, test every button, done. I showed them the key blade before I left and explained that even if the fob had died completely, that blade would have gotten them home.

They drove out of there that same night. The dealer would have been a Monday appointment and a lot more money. When everything is already in the van, a Friday night call is not a crisis.
