Near the Via Real Corridor in Carpinteria, I got a call from a guy who had snapped his key in the ignition of his 2010 Ford Edge at a gas station. Half the blade was still seated in the cylinder. He hadn't forced it further, which was the right call, but he was stuck and starting to spiral a little. Road trip, unfamiliar area, car he couldn't shut off cleanly. I got there with my Lishi tool and worked the broken piece out without touching the wafers. Once the cylinder was clear, I decoded the cut from the lock itself and got a fresh blade cut on site. The remote head key on the 2010 Edge keeps the fob and blade together in one unit, but his fob body was fine. The blade was the only casualty. I programmed the transponder side through the onboard relearn sequence using his one remaining intact spare, and the security system accepted it cleanly.
He was back on the highway in under an hour from when he called. He mentioned the dealer back home had quoted him a multi-day turnaround the last time he needed key work. Out here on a gas station curb in Carpinteria, the whole thing was done before he finished his coffee.
