Out at Rincon Point in Carpinteria, a guy called me just after 6:45 in the morning. He had a 2012 Ford Edge and a job site he needed to be at by 7. The push-button start was not responding and he was standing in the parking lot clicking the fob like that was going to change something.
I was rolling before 7 and pulled up in about 25 minutes.
He had already swapped the battery himself. Smart move, wrong battery. He had put in a CR2025 instead of a CR2032. Same diameter, thinner profile, and it was sitting just loose enough in the tray that contact was intermittent. The system was seeing the key sometimes and not seeing it other times, which is exactly the kind of fault that makes owners think they need a full reprogram.
I opened the fob on the hood, seated a proper CR2032 with clean contacts, and had him test it himself. Push-button start fired right up. Door handles responded. All five buttons working. Total hands-on time was maybe ten minutes.
He clocked in just a few minutes late and texted me that afternoon. The dealer had quoted him a wait of a day or two and a bill that was a fraction of what I charged, in the wrong direction. He was glad he called instead.
