A mechanic shop in Carpinteria called me in on a situation that was already sideways before I got there.
The owner of a 2011 Ford Edge had needed a replacement smart key. A different locksmith took the job, got partway through programming, and then the car battery dropped voltage mid-sequence. Then I spent a few minutes with the shop guys explaining what had happened. Voltage drop during a security handshake is one of those failure modes that looks catastrophic but is recoverable if you have the right tools and do not panic. The previous tech probably had the right equipment and just did not stabilize the power first.
Total time was closer to an hour and a half than a normal key job. The customer had been quoted a flatbed tow plus a multi-day dealer turnaround before the mechanic called me. He saved a good chunk and did not lose his car for three days.
