2008 Ford Edge Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Friday night in Oxnard, near Topa Topa Brewing Company, a couple walked out after dinner and their 2008 Ford Edge wouldn't turn over. Key went into the ignition fine, turned, and nothing. The anti-theft light on the dash was blinking steady instead of going solid, which is the PATS system saying "I don't trust this key."
The wife told me on the phone she thought they'd have to leave it overnight and call a tow Monday. She didn't even know if a locksmith could help. She just Googled "Ford key not working Oxnard" and found my number.
I was about 15 minutes out. Pulled up, checked the key first. Their OUCD6000022 remote head key had a dead CR2032 in it, which killed the lock and unlock buttons, but that alone wouldn't stop the engine from cranking. The 40-bit PATS transponder is passive, powered by the antenna ring around the ignition, so battery state doesn't matter for starting.
Ran my programmer on the OBD-II port. Turned out the transponder had dropped out of the PATS module's memory. It happens on these, especially if a battery disconnect or a low-voltage event clears the PCM. Re-registered the key's 4D-63 chip, popped in a fresh CR2032, and tested. Anti-theft light went solid for two seconds and then off. Engine fired right up.
They drove home that night. The whole thing took maybe 20 minutes, and it cost them a fraction of what the dealer would have quoted on a Monday morning.
