A woman in Carpinteria, parked at a shopping center off the Via Real corridor, called me because her 2017 Edge would not start. Dash just read "No Key Detected." She had already replaced the CR2450 herself that morning after watching a video online.
When I got there she handed me the fob and I could hear the battery rattling loose inside before I even opened it. The CR2450 was a hair too thin, some off-brand cell, and it was not making solid contact with the terminal plate. The positive clip inside the M3N-A2C931426 housing has a specific tension to it and a thinner battery just floats.
I put a Panasonic CR2450 in, seated it right, and the fob lit up. Range came back to normal, push-button start worked, and the door handles responded to touch again.
But she had originally called about getting a spare, not a dead battery. So I pulled out my Smart Pro, connected to the OBD-II port, and ran the PATS inductive key registration on her second-gen Edge. Ford's system on this model uses a 128-bit encryption transponder in the smart key, a step up from the older 80-bit 4D63 chip that the pre-2015 Edges ran. Cut the HU101 emergency insert blade, programmed the new fob, tested all five buttons plus the passive entry on both front doors.
She said her dealer had quoted her a wait of over a week and a price that made her put it off for months. We were done in about 35 minutes in the parking lot.
