Out in Hueneme Beach, a guy flagged me down through his apartment window after I'd just finished a job a few streets over. He'd been dealing with his 2018 Ford Edge fob for about two weeks.
Passive door unlock on the driver side had gone flaky. Sometimes it worked when he grabbed the handle, sometimes it didn't. Then one morning the car just sat there dead-faced when he walked up, no handle response at all. He'd been using the key blade in the door handle as a backup, which works but defeats the whole point.
He'd already been to the dealer. They looked at it, told him they'd need to run a full diagnostic and potentially reflash the body control module, and quoted him more than he wanted to think about. He called me after a neighbor mentioned EZ Car Keyz.
I walked up, had him show me exactly what was happening. The driver handle wasn't responding to passive entry, but the fob buttons still locked and unlocked the car fine. That's actually useful information. If the buttons work but the handle doesn't, the fob itself is almost always fine. I pulled the fob apart on his hood, checked the CR2450. Voltage read low, not dead, but low enough to affect the passive proximity function before it affected the buttons. Passive unlock draws more from the fob than a simple button press does.
Put a fresh CR2450 in, reseated it correctly, and walked every door. Driver handle came back immediately. Passenger side was already working. All five buttons checked out. Engine started clean.
The whole visit was under twenty minutes. He asked about the dealer's reflash quote. I told him a battery swap was the right first move before anything else, and in this case it was also the last move. He'd been dealing with a two-week nuisance for the cost of a battery.
