I got a call from a mechanic shop off State Street in Santa Barbara, not far from Mission Canyon. The story was already messy before I arrived.
A Transit Connect owner had needed a key replacement. Another locksmith took the job, started the programming sequence, and the car battery dropped voltage mid-handshake. The body control module threw a security fault and locked up. The other tech couldn't recover it, so he left. The shop called me to see if I could salvage it.
When I got there, the van was sitting with a key-not-detected condition and the security system refusing to cooperate. The first thing I did was hook up my jump pack to hold stable voltage. That part matters more than people realize. A lot of mid-programming failures on these Fords trace back to the battery sagging under load, and trying to continue without correcting that just layers more faults on top of the original one.
Once I had solid voltage, I cleared the security faults with my diagnostic tool and gave the system a clean starting point. Then I ran a fresh programming sequence on the remote head key. It learned on the first attempt. The key-not-detected warning cleared. Remote functions worked. The blade cut matched the door and ignition.
I walked the shop tech through what had gone wrong so they'd have context for future jobs. The power stability piece is something a lot of locksmiths skip, and it's exactly where these jobs fall apart.
The whole thing took about an hour and a half. Longer than a clean first-attempt job, but the alternative was a flatbed to the dealer and however many days it sat in their queue. The customer paid a fraction of what that route would have cost.
