I was parked on a side street in the College neighborhood in Ventura, working out of my van on a Transit key job.
The owner ran a small trades operation, had one key for the whole vehicle, and it had been the only key since he bought it used. He'd been meaning to get a spare cut for two years. Then the fob remote stopped locking the doors reliably and he started paying attention.
By the time he called me, the remote was inconsistent at ten feet and the key head housing had a crack running along the seam where someone had dropped it on pavement more than once. The transponder inside was still reading fine, which is actually common. The chip is protected. The remote board takes the damage first.
I decoded the lock, cut a fresh blade to match the vehicle, sourced a proper replacement housing with the correct key head for this setup, transferred what was worth transferring, and connected to the OBD port to run the immobilizer learn sequence. The Transit has a mandatory security countdown baked into the process, so we stood there for a few minutes while the system did what it does.
Then I tested. Not a courtesy test. A real one. I walked thirty feet from the van and ran every button. Came back, locked it manually, walked away again, ran it again. Started the van three separate times. Checked that the immobilizer was reading the key correctly on each start, not just the first one.
He watched the whole thing and said he expected me to hand him the key, shake hands, and drive off. The part that got him was when I started it, shut it off, waited, and started it twice more just to rule out anything intermittent. That's the part most people skip, and it's the part that catches the problems that would have shown up on the freeway instead of in his driveway.
He got a working key with a solid housing, tested thoroughly, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him when he called them first.
