A woman flagged me down in the Telegraph Road shopping corridor in Ventura, not even a scheduled call. She was standing next to a white 2019 Ford Transit cargo van outside one of the stores, holding her smart key like it had personally betrayed her.
The dash was showing "No Key Detected." She'd already swapped the CR2450 battery with one from the pharmacy right there in the same lot. Still nothing. She said the dealer told her on the phone it would be a tow-in, leave it for two to three days, and they'd need to order a replacement fob with the 164-R8197 part number.
I popped the fob open on her tailgate. The new CR2450 was in, but the positive contact tab inside the housing had a slight warp to it, just enough that the battery wasn't making solid contact on one side. These M3N-A2C931423 shells are known for that. The plastic is a little flexible around the battery tray and it doesn't take much.
Straightened the tab, reseated the battery, snapped it shut. Then the real test: walk every door handle for proximity unlock, check the start button, run all four buttons including the side door. Everything came back.
She didn't need a new key. She needed someone who'd actually open the fob and look. The whole thing took about ten minutes, and she drove off without a tow truck, a rental, or a week without her work van.
