Got a call from a guy near Rincon Beach Park in Carpinteria. His 2009 MINI Convertible had one key left, and the buttons had gone mushy. Lock, unlock, trunk, all three felt like pressing a wet sponge. The blade still turned the ignition fine, but the remote side was basically dead.
He told me he had already been to the dealer. They wanted to order a new key, said it would be about a week and a half wait for the round-style fob with the IYZKEYR5602 board, then another appointment to program it through the CAS3 module. Two trips, plus the wait.
I drove out with a blank key and my programming setup. Cut the blade to his R57 locks on site using the door to decode. Then paired the new 46-chip transponder through the OBD port, which talks to the CAS3 and writes the key into the system. Tested all three buttons, cycled the ignition, let the immobilizer settle.
The part that stuck with me was how he kept pressing the old key's buttons while I worked, like muscle memory. When I handed him the new one and he heard the locks chirp on the first click, he just looked at the old fob in his other hand and dropped it in his cupholder without a word.
Whole thing took about 40 minutes at his location. A fraction of what the dealer quoted, no appointment chain, no week-plus wait.
