Got a call from a guy near Elings Park in Santa Barbara. His 2011 MINI Convertible wouldn't start that morning, just the usual ELV steering lock delay followed by nothing. Dash showed the key symbol with a line through it. He'd been driving with one key for years and finally it gave up.
He already called the MINI dealer. They told him tow it in, leave it for two or three days, and they'd order a new key because they don't keep the KR55WK49333 round-head blanks on the shelf for R57s anymore. He didn't love that idea.
I pulled up, popped the OBD port cover under the dash, and connected to the CAS3 module. On these, the CAS3 stores the key data and the EWS (electronic immobilizer) is integrated right into that same unit, so once I read the ISN and synced with the DME, it was a matter of cutting the HU92 blade to factory bitting and writing the PCF7945 transponder. Programmed the three-button remote at the same time.
He sat on the grass with his dog the whole time. When the engine turned over on the first try, the dog reacted more than he did. Just a slow nod.
Whole thing took about 35 minutes on site. No tow truck, no leaving the car somewhere for days, and he paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted.
