I got a call from a guy parked near the water in Hollywood by the Sea. He had his 2006 MINI Convertible, one working key left, and that key was doing something specific and annoying: the car would start every time, but the lock and unlock buttons on the fob had stopped responding completely. He had already put in a fresh CR2032. Nothing changed.

I drove out to him. We were standing in the parking area with the ocean breeze doing its thing, which is not ideal when you are working with small components on a fob, but you figure it out. I opened the housing and looked at the board. One of the solder joints at the unlock button contact had a hairline crack, almost invisible. That is a failure point I have seen on these fobs before. The key blade and the transponder side were completely fine.
I resoldered the joint on site, reassembled the fob, and walked every function before I called it done. Car starts, doors lock, doors unlock, all confirmed.
He saved a good chunk compared to the dealer route, and he did not lose his car for several days waiting on a part that was never actually broken.
