Got a call from a guy at the Esplanade Shopping Center in Oxnard. His 2006 MINI Convertible would not start, and he had one key left that looked like it had been through a garbage disposal. The blade was bent slightly at the tip, the plastic housing had a crack running down one side, and the battery cover was held on with electrical tape.
He said the car had been acting up for weeks. Sometimes it would crank but not fire. Sometimes the EWS light on the dash would blink and stay on. Classic immobilizer rejection pattern on these R52s. The PCF7935 transponder chip inside his old key was still alive, but barely. That cracked housing let moisture in, and corrosion was creeping across the board.
I confirmed EWS3 under the dash, cut a fresh HU92 blade to code, programmed the new ID44 transponder through the OBD-II port, and synced all three buttons on the LX8F2V remote. Lock, unlock, trunk. Tested each one from across the parking lot and again from inside the car with the doors shut.
The part that stuck with me: he turned the ignition and just held the key there for a second after it fired, like he was afraid to let go. Two weeks of fighting a dying key will do that.
He kept the old one as a backup. I told him it was more of a souvenir at this point.
