2005 MINI Convertible Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a guy in La Colonia, right around the time the morning marine layer was burning off. He had a 2005 MINI Convertible and one key, and that key had stopped unlocking the doors remotely. The blade still worked fine in the lock cylinder and the car started, so he had been doing everything manually for about a week before he called me.
When I got there and looked at the key, I could see the housing had taken some wear. The key lived on a crowded ring, and the pivot on the blade had loosened just enough that the fob was flexing slightly every time it got pulled out of a pocket. That flex was breaking the connection between the battery contact and the board intermittently.
I popped it open on the hood of my van. CR2032 was low, contact had a slight oxidation ring, and there was a hairline gap where the case halves meet near the board. Cleaned the contact, seated a fresh CR2032, and reseated the case. Tested lock, unlock, and the third button. All three responding clean at normal range.
He had already called the dealer. They told him to come in, said they would probably need to order a new key and program it. He was looking at waiting a few days and paying a good chunk more than he needed to. We were done in about twenty minutes on his street, no tow, no waiting room.
