A woman from the Via Real Corridor called me on a Wednesday afternoon. She had been to a locksmith already, one of the shop-based guys, and he told her the job needed to go to the dealer because of the way the immobilizer works on older MINIs. So she called the dealer. They wanted to schedule her out several days and the quote made her pause.

When I pulled up, the car was sitting in her driveway on Via Real, top down because she had gotten home before the last key gave out completely. The fob was the original, still on the factory keyring hardware, worn enough that the battery door had a little play in it. That was the first thing I checked. The CR2032 inside had enough voltage to read fine on a tester but the contact point on the positive side was slightly bowed outward, barely touching the battery face.
I reset the contact, seated a fresh CR2032, and tested range from across the driveway. Locks, unlocks, the third button. All of it working clean.
She had been ready to spend real money on a dealer appointment. Turned out the fob just needed the kind of attention a shop visit never gives you because nobody has time to sit with the car in a parking lot and actually work through it. I did, right there on Via Real, and she paid a fraction of what the dealer had quoted.
