Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2017 MINI Convertible Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman in San Roque called me on a Tuesday afternoon. She had one key for her 2017 MINI Convertible and it had been getting flaky for a couple of weeks. Short range, had to hold it close to the start button, that kind of thing. Then one morning it just stopped being recognized entirely.

She had already called the dealer. They told her the key needed to be ordered to her VIN, and she was looking at several business days before they could even get her in. She had work. She had a kid. She did not have several days.

I was in Santa Barbara already, so I swung through San Roque that same afternoon. First thing I did was pop the fob open and check the CR2032. It was the original battery - six years old, still reading a little voltage but not enough to do the job consistently. Swapped it, reseated it properly, tested range from across the parking pad.

Range came back, but the fob still would not register a start. At that point I knew the fob itself had given up. Happens when a battery drains slowly over a long period - sometimes the fob just stops communicating cleanly even after a fresh cell goes in.

I pulled out the diagnostic tablet, connected through the OBD port, and registered a new fob to her vehicle right there in her driveway. Walked every button, confirmed the doors, tested the start. The whole job was done before she finished her coffee.

The dealer timeline was days away. I was there the same afternoon she called, and she paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted her.
