Got a call from someone near Leadbetter Beach in Santa Barbara. Their 2014 MINI Convertible was sitting in a lot with the top up, both keys gone. One lost somewhere on a trip, the other dropped who knows where. The car just sat there for two days because they thought it had to be flatbedded to a dealer.
It didn't.
I pulled up, got the door open without any damage, and decoded the lock cylinder for the mechanical cut. The R57 uses the same HU92 keyway as most BMW-platform MINIs from this era, so the key got cut on my portable machine right on the hood. Then I plugged into the OBD2 port and ran the all-keys-lost procedure through the CAS3+ module. That part takes patience. The CAS3+ has a timed security lockout, around 15 minutes of the system just sitting there thinking about it before it accepts the new Hitag2 transponder ID.
While we waited, the owner kept glancing at the dash like the car was going to throw a fit. It didn't. New key registered, comfort access responded, remote lock and unlock worked from ten feet away. I programmed a second key on the spot so they wouldn't end up back in the same situation.
The whole thing took about 45 minutes on site. No tow truck, no week-long wait at the dealer, no rental car in between.
