How Mini Countryman Keys Changed Over the Years
R60, Gen 1
OBD-II programming is the only way to get a new key working on these. Your R60 Countryman uses a remote head key with an ID 48 transponder chip and the BMW CAS3 immobilizer system. It is a 3-button key with a high security blade, and there is no push-button start on this generation. We plug into the diagnostic port, program the chip to your EWS module, and you are driving again.
F60, Gen 2 with Push-Button Start
OBD-II or on-board programming handles these, depending on the situation. The F60 smart key models moved to the CAS4 immobilizer, which is more advanced security. You get a 3-button smart key with push-button start, still using an ID 48 chip and CR2032 battery. Proximity detection lets you unlock and start without pulling the key out of your pocket.
F60, Gen 2 Base Trim
OBD-II programming is required for these base-trim F60 models. If your 2017 or 2018 Countryman has a flip key instead of a smart key, you have the base configuration. Same CAS4 immobilizer and ID 48 chip as the smart key version, but no push-button start. You flip the blade out, insert it, and turn to start.
U25, Gen 3 (All-New Platform)
The 2024 redesign moved the Countryman to BMW's latest electrical architecture. Smart proximity keys only, with a more advanced encrypted immobilizer than the F60. Programming a spare or all-keys-lost calls for current diagnostic tooling and an online server handshake. We carry the equipment to cut and pair these.
Which Key Does Your Countryman Use?
This is the standard key for R60 Countryman models. The blade and remote are built into one unit, and you insert it into the ignition to start the car.
The smart key stays in your pocket. Your Countryman detects it when you walk up, unlocks the doors, and lets you push a button to start. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for dead battery situations.
Base-trim F60 models use a flip key where the blade folds into the fob. You flip it out, insert it into the ignition, and turn to start. Same chip and programming as the smart key version.
The third-generation Countryman (U25) launched for 2024 on an all-new platform with a fresh BMW-family smart proximity key. Walk-up unlock and push-button start, with a hidden emergency blade inside the fob. These run a newer encrypted immobilizer, so a key needs the correct tooling and a server connection to pair.

Common Countryman Key Problems
Key Fob Battery Drain
Owners blame the fob when it is a battery drain. Mini released bulletin SI M12 07 13 covering premature CR2032 discharge on 2011-2018 Countryman fobs. Fix is a fresh battery and a software update; if drain repeats, fob internals may need replacement.
Transponder Sync Failure
First check on a 2011-2016 R60 that cranks but will not start: the CAS3 immobilizer comms. A battery swap or moisture can knock the transponder out of sync with the EWS module. We plug in, scan, reprogram. Common call from Simi Valley and Camarillo.
Proximity Sensor Malfunction
The CAS4 system in 2017-2018 F60 smart key models handles proximity detection. When it glitches, the Countryman stops recognizing the key in your pocket. Doors will not unlock, push-button start is intermittent. Usually software. We reprogram with Autel IM608.
Can You Program a Countryman Key Yourself?
No self-programming option exists for the R60 Countryman. The CAS3 immobilizer requires professional OBD-II tools to program a new transponder chip.
The CAS4 system on F60 smart key models requires professional equipment for programming. There is no DIY add-key procedure available.
Same CAS4 immobilizer as the smart key version. No self-programming, no shortcuts. You need a locksmith with the right tools.

Did You Know?
Back in 2011, Mini did something unusual with the Countryman. It was the first Mini ever to offer all-wheel drive, introducing the ALL4 system that shared key immobilizer technology with its BMW X1 sibling. Two very different vehicles, same security DNA under the hood.
