I got a call from someone out in Nyeland Acres on a Wednesday morning. She had a 2014 MINI Countryman sitting in the driveway and a fob that had stopped being recognized. Not intermittent -- just gone. The dash was showing a key-not-detected warning every time she got in and tried to start it.
She had already swapped the battery herself. CR2032, correct size, brand new from the pharmacy. Didn't help.
I pulled up, opened the fob on the hood of my service van, and the first thing I noticed was the battery contact on the negative side had a slight bend to it -- just enough that the new battery wasn't making solid contact. She had probably pried the old one out with something that caught the clip. Straightened it, cleaned both contacts, reseated the CR2032.
Still needed to verify the fob was actually paired properly, because a fob that loses communication can sometimes need to be re-registered even after a contact fix. Plugged in through the OBD port, confirmed the fob was still enrolled, ran a full button test. Lock, unlock, and both remaining buttons. Everything came back clean.
The car started. She stood there for a second like she was waiting for it to change its mind.
She asked what the dealer would have said. Probably a new fob, programming fee, and a few days out. She was back in her car in under an hour, and she didn't need any of that.
