A guy over in RiverPark reached out on a Tuesday afternoon. He had his only key, but it had been acting up for a while: intermittent no-start, sometimes took three or four tries before the car would turn over. Then one morning it just stopped working entirely. Car sitting in his driveway, not going anywhere.
He had already called the MINI dealer. They told him to get it towed in, said it would be a few days minimum once parts were ordered through their system, and the quote was enough to make him start looking for other options.
I pulled up in the EZ Car Keyz van, right there in RiverPark. He met me at the driveway. While I was setting up, he mentioned he had been putting off dealing with it for two weeks because the dealer process sounded so painful.
I cut a new remote head key from the blank I had in the van, then connected to the OBD port and ran through the programming sequence. The transponder enrolled, the fob buttons came up working, and the car started on the first turn. The whole thing took about 35 minutes from the time I opened the van doors.
He asked if he should keep his old key as a spare since it was intermittent, not totally dead. I told him the smarter move was to get a second new key programmed right then, while I was already connected, rather than find out later that the old one finally gave up in a parking lot somewhere. He went with the spare. Smart call.
The dealer quote never came up again after that.
