Got a call from a guy near the Oxnard Transit Center. His 2016 Countryman S was sitting in a parking spot and the only smart key he had was acting up. Push the start button, nothing. Dash would flash "Key invalid" and just sit there. He had already swapped in a fresh CR2032 twice thinking the battery was the problem.
When I got there, I pulled up the CAS3+ through the OBD port. The key's transponder ID was still registered but the module was not authenticating the Hitag2 handshake. Basically the CAS3+ saw the fob but did not trust it anymore. This happens on R60s, especially when the battery dies while the key is nearby and the module gets a partial signal over and over.
I re-registered the NBGIDGNG1 to the CAS3+, verified the 46 chip response, and programmed all four buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, and panic. Then the part I never skip. Walk every function. Push start, push stop. Lock from ten feet, twenty feet. Pop the tailgate. Check the dash for any lingering fault codes.
He was leaning against a bench the whole time, watching his phone. When I handed the key back and the Countryman fired right up, he just nodded and said "that's it?" That was it.
